Call for Expressions of Interest from Dispute Resolution Professionals, Including Mediators

The World Bank Group’s Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) is looking for experienced dispute resolution specialists interested in and able to mediate on behalf of CAO.


The Office of the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman (CAO) is the independent accountability mechanism for the International Financial Corporation (IFC) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), members of the World Bank Group. CAO’s mandate is to address complaints regarding environmental and social concerns from people affected by IFC/MIGA projects in a manner that is fair, objective, and equitable, and to enhance the outcomes of those projects. A detailed description of CAO’s mandate, functions, and procedures can be found in CAO’s Operational Guidelines.

CAO consists of three functions: Dispute Resolution, Compliance and Advisory. In its Dispute Resolution role, CAO uses dispute resolution tools to find solution to issues raised in complaints about IFC/MIGA projects. The most common tool utilized is mediation and as such CAO is constantly looking to build its global network of mediators.


CAO is currently looking for competent dispute resolution professionals interested in participating in our screening process with a view to be included as consultants in the CAO Mediator Network. Competent mediators include those individuals with formal mediation training, hands-on mediation experience, and, in particular, experience working in multi-party and community-company dispute resolution processes. While formal mediation training is preferred, it is not a pre-requisite.

We are exclusively looking for mediators based in countries where IFC and MIGA are involved and from where CAO receives complaints. This notably excludes the U.S.A, Canada, Japan, Australia and Western Europe.
